Hyland Names Tomijiro Sugiyama New Japan Country Manager
Hyland has named veteran industry leader Tomijiro Sugiyama its new country manager for Japan. He will oversee revenue generation efforts, Hyland's continued focus on cloud-first solutions, partner relationship management and development, and more.
Sugiyama has nearly 30 years of senior-level sales leadership in Japan, for Fortune 500 companies and startups alike in fields including financial services, insurance — both of which align well with priority Hyland verticals — manufacturing, telecommunications and distribution.
He will continue Hyland's strong track record in the region — where the content services market is expected to grow by 10% to 15% in 2022 — and focus on customer digital transformation, IoT and artificial intelligence solutions.
"I'm excited to work closely with our team in Japan to streamline our operations and grow our presence in this important market," Sugiyama said. "I share the same values that Hyland prioritizes as a company: We treat our employees and colleagues as family, and we treat our customers as partners — and seek shared success."
In his most recent role, as country manager for Japan for Kinetica DB Inc., Sugiyama led planning strategy and sales for the analytics company. Prior to that role, he has served in senior-level roles at Oracle, Tripwire, Compuware and others. Sugiyama's experience with prominent system integrators in Japan will be a key part of his new role, as those companies are crucial in the Japanese market.
"The appointment of Tomijiro as our country manager for Japan shows Hyland's commitment to growing our Japan business," said Eugene Chng, associate vice president, international, Hyland. "We believe Tomi will help accelerate our effort to expand our market reach and partnerships in the areas we are targeting, and we're confident that our investments in the region will further solidify our leadership position in the content services industry."
In other news, Hyland and TECH CORPS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring students have access to computer science programs, have announced a five-year partnership extension.
As part of the partnership, Hyland and TECH CORPS will continue to partner to bring high quality computer science education to students from elementary school to high school. The partnership has continued to evolve, as the organizations now are developing new curricula and reaching students in new communities across Ohio.
"TECH CORPS has been a truly collaborative partner of Hyland’s, and we’ve developed a partnership that fits both of our organizational goals," said John Phelan, executive vice president and chief product officer, Hyland, and a member of TECH CORPS' board of directors. "We're committed to giving back and collaborating on our joint mission with funding and significant employee support, and we know that TECH CORPS has the knowledge, insight and expertise to execute these programs."
CSEdWeek, which runs Dec. 6-12, is an annual event designed to inspire students to learn computer science, advocate for equity in computer science education, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers and partners within the field. Hyland has partnered with TECH CORPS on the event for the last three years, and this year, 5,000 students in third and fourth grades in 10 states will participate in programming centered around the connection between computer science and mathematics. Hyland has incentivized teacher and classroom participation with funding for computer science materials for winning teachers' classrooms.
"We can't do this work alone, which is why it's important to work with partners who are not only aligned with our mission, but actively collaborate with us to advance that mission," said Lisa Chambers, national executive director, TECH CORPS. "We're so pleased to extend our partnership with Hyland, which has patiently and intentionally developed a truly strategic long-term partnership with us."
Hyland's partnership with TECH CORPS is just one part of the company's broad efforts to build and inspire careers in technology programs. The company aims to spark and inspire interest in technology, provide experiential opportunities meant to develop and grow students’ curiosity around tech, and engage and retain that interest and advance students' skills.
Those efforts include:
- Hyland’s STEM program at Cleveland State University’s Fenn Academy, through which Hyland encourages students to pursue higher education in engineering and computer science by bridging the education gap in math between high school and college
- 10-year partnership with St. Martin de Porres High School in Cleveland on the school's work-study program; Hyland recently expanded its presence at St. Martin, providing weekly professional training to students in OnBase, Hyland’s content services platform
- Longtime partnership with Youth Opportunities Unlimited, through which Hyland has supported internship programs – six students interned at Hyland in 2021. Hyland has hosted virtual career panels featuring representatives from many technical roles (cybersecurity, software development and more), and Hyland employees also have served as instructors and mentors for sophomores and juniors in Cuyahoga County.
- Weekly coding pilot program at Cleveland’s Urban Community School
- And more
In other news, Hyland's Nuxeo digital asset management (DAM) platform has been named a Leader in Omdia's Universe report, "Selecting a Digital Asset Management Solution, 2021-22."
In the report, Omdia recommends Hyland appear on the shortlist for those buyers that want DAM to serve the entire enterprise rather than just sales and marketing, and prefer a single vendor to manage all types of assets.
Hyland’s enterprise-class DAM offering was also recognized by Omdia for strengths in:
- Extensive artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities — from common-use cases to business-specific instances
- Wide applicability in AI-powered search
- Strong governance and security capabilities
- The open-source nature of the platform
"We believe this recognition from Omdia affirms the strong fit of our DAM platform within our long-term product vision, and how DAM has enabled our customers to tap into an additional capability on their digital transformation journeys," said John Phelan, executive vice president and chief product officer, Hyland.
In the report, Omdia highlights Hyland's two levels of AI capabilities including the ability to use publicly available AI services from cloud providers and its natively built Nuxeo Insight — the latter a low-code experience that enables customers to develop business-specific models to enrich metadata, automate business processes and identify new insights.
"A differentiator for Nuxeo Insight is that it has a front end that has been designed to allow business users to train the engine, rather than data scientists and engineers," Omdia states.
